The Power Dynamic

Its been a while, but it feels so good to be back.To say that I have been busy is an understatement. And to say that I have been fine and all is well is an over statement, however, allow me to cut to the chase and tell you one of the most intriguing thoughts that have held my mind hostage recently.
It may have occured to me at some point but it couldn't be any clearer when  I went through some mind blowing Literature by Robert Greene and realised how important and crucial what I am about to share with you is.
You, my dear reader may be familiar with Robert Greene and his famous 48 Laws of Power which If you ask me should be the "Bible" for anyone and everyone seeking to be a leader in any worthwhile endeavour be it at home, work, the army, nation,or the entire cosmos as we know it.
You ought to get the 5Oth Law folks.Mind blowing to say the least.
Now before you stop reading because you think I am aboout to give you a lecture on Management and Leadership, think again.
My interest is purely to bring to your attention the fact that Power doesn't start or end with people in leadership or managerial positions.
Each and every individual alive has power and how they manifest it and use it is what uniquely separates us at the end of the day.
In our daily encounters we exude power with our every statement and gesture whether done consciously or unconsciously.
At the work place,in our homes,at the bar,at the church,at the sports club, even the Mother's Union meeting;name a place and I will show you exactly how power is used, shifts, and is expended by the people within these spaces.
Picture this. When meeting someone for the first time, what are the very first questions they will ask you. Before we even get to that, how you are dressed, your cologne, your gait, your entire body and even something as subtle as your accent will give way to the other person's judgement of who you are, where you are from, your level of education, your level of income and whether or not knowing you wil be beneficial to them or not.
It is at a conversational level that Power begins to express itself in various forms.
As human beings,we have learnt to quickly read into body language and this is a gift not many people have. But think about it,why is there so much emphasis on the way you shake a stranger's hand, eye contact, posture and gait.It is beacuse in that brief second, someone can tell so much about you from just a handshake.
I personally(and I am no palm reader, just an astute student of the human psyche)can tell with 80% clarity through the above lens.
  • Your level of education
  • How confident you are.
  • Your income bracket.
  • How powerful and ambitious you are and to what lengths you are willing to go to communicate this to the rest of the world.
  • Whether or not you are going to be a push over or a hard nut to crack.
  • How informed you are about social behaviour.
Humans unlike any other animal have perfected the art of mastering their suroundings. When in a new environment, humans will tend to take some time to know their territory, know how things operate, know what it takes to get on top of things and then decide which side of the coin they want to be.
For some people it takes longer than others, but for those with what Greene calls Machiavellian intelligence,it doesn't take long to realise that you need to make your way to the top of the pecking order or else you will just be as insignificant as a door knob.
It is with this knowledge that the real mind games begin as everyone tries to out do each other in a quest to to get to the top. Many people still believe humans are far removed from animals but when you begin to realise the mind games people play to out do each other, you begin to see a pattern that very easily leads to the conclusion that "it is a real jungle out there and only the best survive."
